Police said action is being taken against foreigners who come to Pune on different visas, but are found to be overstaying. (File)Pune city police have deported as many as 53 illegal immigrants, including 19 men and 34 women from different countries, in 2024. Police said action against illegal activities by foreign nationals staying illegally in Pune city has been intensified.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (special branch) Milind Mohite, of the 53 illegal immigrants deported, 19, all of them women, were from Uganda. Besides, 10 were from Nigeria, eight from Yemen, seven from Afghanistan, three from Bangladesh and one each from Congo, Iran, Iraq, Ivory Coast, Russia and Thailand.
In 2022, 13 foreign nationals were deported from Pune city. They included three from Yemen, three from Romania, two from Bangladesh, two from Sudan and one each from Iran, Ghana and Iraq.
Twenty foreign nationals were deported in 2023, who included 10 from Thailand, seven from Uganda, two from Uzbekistan and one each from Korea, Liberia and Yemen.
Police said a total of 86 illegal immigrants were deported from Pune between 2022 and 2024. Some of those deported were “blacklisted”, so that they are not allowed to come back to India. Several other foreign nationals, who were found overstaying in Pune, were issued “Leave India” notices and sent back to their countries.

Police said people from countries like Yemen and Uganda come to Pune for medical treatment and other purposes, but later they avoid going back to their country, claiming the situation there is not secure.
During the annual press conference, police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said an “intel-based” operation is being carried out to find out Bangladeshi infiltrators residing illegally in Pune and those who are providing Indian documents to them.
Last week, the police arrested a 34-year-old Bangladeshi national Ehsan Hafiz Shaikh for residing in India illegally for the last 20 years. An FIR was lodged against him at the Swargate police station on Thursday. According to the FIR, police recovered seven Aadhaar cards, two voting cards, two driving licences, seven PAN cards, four passports, nine debit cards, nine credit cards, one “universal pass”, eight birth certificates and currency of Bangladesh, Pakistan, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait and Qatar, from the accused’s residence.
