Pune district collector Rajesh Deshmukh has set up a four-member committee headed by deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Vijaykumar Magar to investigate the Sunday morning accident involving a passenger bus and a goods-carrying truck that left four dead and 22 others injured.

The committee has been given a seven-day deadline to complete the inquiry and submit its report. It has been tasked with suggesting short-term and long-term measures to prevent accidents on this stretch.

Deshmukh said among the injured, five persons have been admitted to Sassoon General Hospital, nine to Chavan Multispeciality Hospital, six to Navale Hospital, and two to Dinanath Mangeshkar Memorial Hospital. “Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has taken cognizance of the incident and enquired about the well-being of the injured,” added Deshmukh.

Deshmukh said the Save Life Foundation had earlier conducted a review of the accidents happening near Navale Bridge, an accident-prone area close to which Sunday’s accident also took place. Based on the recommendations of the NGO, several measures, such as the installation of strips, removal of encroachment from the roadside, installation of protective metal barriers on both sides of the road, increasing the number of traffic policemen deployed, and the installation of rumble strips to slow the speed of the vehicles approaching the bridge, were taken.
