Primary school teachers protest against transfers

Over 2,000 primary school teachers from Pune,Solapur,Sangli,Kolhapur and Satara took out a protest rally against alleged irregularities in the administrative transfer processes of the zilla parishad.

Over 2,000 primary school teachers from Pune,Solapur,Sangli,Kolhapur and Satara took out a protest rally against alleged irregularities in the administrative transfer processes of the zilla parishad. They demanded a stay on the zilla parishad’s transfer orders that allegedly flouted government norms.

The teachers, members of the Maharashtra State Primary School Teachers’ Association, took out the march from Shaniwarwada to the district collector’s office near the Council Hall. The association has alleged irregularities in the procedure, wherein people who did not deserve promotions got promoted.

Association president Nana Joshi said,“The whole process has been carried out illegally, flouting norms. Technically,if a husband and wife are working in the same department, they should not be transferred to a place more than 30 km away. There are so many people who have been transferred to almost 100-150 km. This is against the rules.”

A teacher from Sangli who took part in the rally said,“It is really sad. The correct procedure is to release a list of people to be transferred so that if anyone has a problem, they can file an apeal for a change. No such list was published. It was all done silently so that no one could protest.”

The teachers have also objected to transfer of unmarried, widowed or ill women. “There are so many widows and unmarried women who have been transferred to far-off places. Also, people suffering from illnesses have been shifted. There needs to be some norm.

Also, many of the promotions are biased. There were certain people who were posted in tribal areas and they were shifted to tribal areas instead of urban areas in their next transfer too. This is unfair,” Joshi said. He said the association planned to organise more protest programmes soon.
