As per the surveys conducted so far, 3,853 homes in Sangli district have been damaged in the floods, with 625 completely destroyed. In Kolhapur, the number of damaged homes has been pegged at 12,512, of which 747 have been completely destroyed.
Pune Divisional Commissioner Deepak Mhaisekar on Sunday said the administration will now focus on providing health facilities and conducting cleanliness drives in the flood-affected areas as soon as the water recedes.
The woman, identified as Vasanti Maruti Nandavdekar, and her son, Soham, were travelling with their family to their native place in Gadhinglaj, Kolhapur, to attend the funeral of the woman’s mother-in-law.
The cane crushing season in the state had started on October 20, but only 65 mills had started their operations. Mills in Western Maharashtra had ceased their operations after members of the Sanghatana and other farmer bodies resorted to violent protests.
Political analyst Chandrakant Bhujbal said that Khot standing from Hathkhanagale might restrict Shetti to his area only. “That will help the BJP in other constituencies as he will not be free to campaign across the state,” he said.
