The city traffic police have detected 14 stolen vehicles using the ‘Traffi-i-cop’ system. Under this system, the traffic cops are using the Blackberry phones to telling effect. The phones are connected to a centralised server which contains details of all vehicles registered with the RTO. The vehicles are now in the process of being handed over to the owners.
DCP (traffic) Manoj Patil said,A team led by Police inspector Arvind Gokule checked the vehicles impounded by the police lying in various police stations for months as well as other unclaimed vehicles. The team found out the names and addresses of all the owners. Some vehicles had fake registration numbers,as they were stolen ones. So we found out the names and addresses of the owners with the help of engine and chassis numbers. Following the entire exercise,we found that 14 vehicles which were impounded or lying unclaimed were stolen ones.
Patil said that the respective owners had registered cases pertaining to the 14 stolen vehicles in police stations across the city. “We have informed these police stations to hand over the vehicles to the respective owners,” said Patil. Patil said that the traffic police department has been able to track hit-and-run,chain-snatching and vehicle theft cases with the help of the Traffic-i-cop system. Also, six unclaimed vehicles lying with the police would also be handed over the original owners.
