Pune Municipal Corporation to pitch for world record in ‘story telling’ on Dec 14

Book festival and kids festival also to be held this week

In festival mode, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), apart from organising a range of festivals in the city in December, is also going to attempt to set a world record in ‘story telling’ on December 14, from 8 am to 10 am at SP College. On the same day, the ‘Keep silence Punekars are reading’ initiative will also be held. Alongside, the Pune Book festival is slated from December 16 to 24.

The attempt to set a world record is a joint initiative by the state government, PMC, Savitribai Phule Pune University, National Book Trust and SP College. As many as 4,500 parents will narrate a story to their children under the initiative. The purpose of the event is to stress upon parents the importance of telling stories to children, and to inculcate values in their ward.

“China holds the world record of 2,500 parents telling stories to their children at an event, and that is set to be broken on December 14,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner Vikas Dhakane.

Set to take part in the ‘Keep silence, Punekars are reading’ event are all government, semi-government, private employees and employees union. The event, as part of the Pune Book Festival, is best suited to the city which boasts a rich legacy of culture and history. PMC has also organised Urban95 Kids festival in the city from December 14 to 17 at Sarasbaug with the motive of ‘nurturing child development through everyone’s participation’. It promises to be a fun and learning activity with free entry for children below six years, along with their parents. The first two days will cover ‘early stimulation’ and the next two days will be about ‘responsive parenting’.

The fun activities for young children are aimed at invoking creativity and imagination, while also bringing awareness amongst parents and society about early childhood development and parenting techniques. A magic show, origami session, puppet show, clay pottery, story telling, sand play, drawing and responsive parenting are among the attractions.

Urban95 Kids will be the second children’s festival by PMC. Divided into four zones, the first one—Friendship Town—will include two sessions on children-parent engagement, stimulation sessions with parents, responsive parenting techniques and experiences. The second zone will be ‘Toddler Street’ that will include playful toys, and games by clap, play and learn corner, toys and games from home material, tiny lawn games.

The third zone ‘Discovery Zone’ includes story telling sessions, puppet shows, traffic safety related games and activity, magic show, clay pottery and making your fort with clay and legos. The fourth zone ‘Education System’ will have ‘make your own mask’, ‘name that smell’ and the brain balance centre to stimulate brain development, mad science, hands on experiments, Pune public library and interactive physics lab.

The two stages will see dance and song performances and a magic show, among others.

PMC, on Monday, celebrated Pedestrian Day by hosting ‘Walking Plaza’ on Laxmi Road that was declared a vehicle-free street for the day. There are activities like painting, dancing, singing, playing organised on the walking plaza initiative.
