PMC seizes Sinhagad Institute properties over non-payment of tax dues

Over Rs 47 crore in tax is pending to be paid by the institute, according to the seizure warrant by the tax department.

Pune sinhagadA letter by the Deputy Commissioner to Sinhgad Technical Institute dated September 24, 2024 stated that the department had sent the property tax demand for FY 2024-2025 under Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Rules 1949 to the Institute.

The Pune Municipal Corporation taxation and tax collection department has seized properties of Sinhgad Technical Institute, Erandwane, over non-payment of property tax. Over Rs 47 crore in tax is pending to be paid by the institute, according to the seizure warrant by the tax department.

PMC Deputy Commissioner (Taxation and Tax Collection Department) Madhav Jagtap, who signed the warrant, told The Indian Express, “We had given a seizure notice earlier but the tax was not paid. Now we have done a punchnama and seized the properties. If the dues are paid within 30 days, the seizure can be revoked. If not, the properties will be auctioned to collect the dues.” According to details shared, the Rs 47 crore charge is a combination of dues from years 2016-2014. Jagtap added that the institute will be allowed to function as per usual.

A letter by the Deputy Commissioner to Sinhgad Technical Institute dated September 24, 2024 stated that the department had sent the property tax demand for FY 2024-2025 under Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Rules 1949 to the Institute, but the dues had not been paid. It added that a property tax of Rs over 47 crore must be paid by September 30 or a penalty interest of 2% per month will be charged on the amount. Now in December, the tax department has seized the properties of the Institute as the dues have yet to be paid.
