Joint Commissioner of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and chief of the civic department of Urban Community Development (UCD) Ashok Kalamkar passed away on Friday night after a cardiac arrest. He was 53 and is survived by his wife,son and a daughter. The last rites were performed on Saturday at the crematorium in Koregaon Park.
Kalamkar was instrumental in implementing various schemes for the welfare of the slum-dwellers. He played a major role in carrying out several civic projects including literacy drives,setting up of self-help groups,initiating computer literacy amongst the urban poor,scholarships to 10th and 12th standard students from the economically backward class and setting up training centres for unemployed youth.
Kalamkar had commenced his services at the PMC in 1984 as a project officer.
A condolence meet has been organised at the PMC headquarters at 5 pm on Monday.
