Pimpri commuters battle potholes

Forty-year-old Deepak Chandekar, who travels from Chinchwad to Pune daily, regularly runs into a pothole right in front of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) in Pimpri. “It has been there for around three months,” he said.

“Several civic officers and corporators use the road frequently, but apparently nobody has alerted the civic administration,” said Chandekar. The pothole has over the months turned into a crater, effectively reducing the road width. This, said activist Sanjeevani Pandey, reflected the approach of the PCMC administration. “Even if something is happening close to the PCMC headquarters, the civic officials are not concerned. When will the PCMC wake up to the needs of the citizens?” she said.

The situation across the industrial town is no different. Right at the entrance of Indrayani Nagar, potholes greet commuters. The area houses many industries. “Despite this, the PCMC is not taking the issue of bad roads seriously,” said Shiv Sena activist Sarang Kamthekar.

In Pimpri Camp and portions of the Pimpri-Chinchwad-Link Road, commuters have to be extra vigilant lest they encounter trouble in the form of a pothole or crater. The congested and narrow Kalewadi continues to be a nightmare for road users.

When contacted, the PCMC authorities said the civic body was waiting for the rain to stop. “We will start road repair work immediately. Since the rain had an extended run this year,we had to postpone our plans of filling up the potholes,” said Municipal Commissioner Asheesh Sharma.
