Giving a shot in the arm for people of Phursungi and Uruli Devachi villages in the suburbs of Pune city,a panel of legislators has recommended that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) shift the garbage dumping sites located near the villages to its own limits. For long, people of these villages have been agitating to get the dumps shifted. The Estimates Committee headed by NCP MLA from Purandhar,Ashok Tekawade,in its report submitted to the state legislature on Monday, observed that the demand of the residents was justified.
The report also asked the state urban development department to give instructions to PMC and other corporations and municipal councils as well, regarding measures to be taken on solid waste management on a war footing.
Dumping of garbage at Uruli Devachi and Phursungi had been on for the last 18 years causing pollution and fires, besides affecting the health of local residents, the committee has noted.
Considering the problems caused to residents, the sites must be shifted to the municipal limits immediately and a report in this regard presented to the committee in three months, said the committee.
It said considering water pollution during monsoon, unhygienic conditions leading to a mosquito menace, health problems and negative impact on the local industry and agriculture,it was necessary for the garbage dump to be shut down immediately and for the PMC to dispose of solid waste daily in its own limits using modern technology, which would also do away with problems regarding transportation of garbage.
The committee observed that the problem of disposal of solid waste was being faced by all the municipal corporations and councils in the state and suggested that the state urban development department give directions on a war footing to the corporations and various municipal councils on measures to be taken in this regard.
It suggested that the facilities for the disposal of solid waste had to be created within in the limits of the municipal corporation or council concerned. It also noted that the disposal of electronic waste was a serious problem in Pune city and other industrial cities.
The committee said the government has laid down clear rules for disposal of solid waste in proposed housing societies or else existing rules could be implemented. It added that instead of putting the responsibility solely on the municipal corporations and councils, the government (urban development department) should consider the matter seriously and urgently.
