A Pune-based group has set up a foodgrains park in Latur where grain is stored in silo bags,an innovative and economical way of storing foodgrains in bulk. Panama Birva Agro Private Limited aims to provide the storage services to clients, including government corporations and private processors.
Silo bags are cost effective on-the-farm storage systems originally developed in Argentina more than a decade ago. Grains can be stored for 18 to 24 months in the bag. The system is in use in over 22 countries for storing crops like paddy, wheat, maize, soybean and sunflower, said Panama Group MD Parag Agarwal.
The group has set up the park,a first in Maharashtra, for a Soya Crushing Plant of a US-based processing company. These silo bags, which come in size of 60 metre length and 3 metre diameter, preserve the original moisture content and do not require use of disinfectants.
According to Agarwal, the system has an ability to create storage for large quantities within short time. The bags can withstand varied climatic conditions.
To implement the Grain Park concept in India,Panama Group has collaborated with well experienced Global Consortium of Companies, including South Africa-based Samadis,Argentina-based Plaster,a producer of Silo Bags and Akron,a manufacturer of heavy duty machinery required for bagging and debagging of grain.
