Three students of Class IV of Deccan Education Society’s English Medium School were beaten up on Saturday on the school premises by a 21-year-old youth who is in no way connected to the school. The incident took place over a petty dispute during the recess.

The Vishrambaug police arrested Neeraj Ashok Kale of Navi Peth late in the evening for beating up the students. According to the police, the students were playing on the school ground during the recess when the dispute took place. “Kale who resides near the school was sitting on the ground and was hit by a ball. He slapped a Class IV student and two of his classmates,” said the police.

After the incident, parents gathered at the school and demanded immediate action. A parent, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Indian Express that it was the school’s apathy towards security on the premises that had led to the incident. “The students have got beaten up earlier to for no fault of theirs,” said the parent.

“The school’s compound wall has collapsed on one side and some anti-social elements always use this as a way to enter the school. These youths had beaten up a security guard of the school a few days back. Even after repeated complaints by the parents, the school has not increased the security,” said the parent.

Meanwhile,in a clarification issued by the school, the authorities have admitted that the compound wall was broken. “We had repaired the wall at least 10 to 12 times before this. However, the anti-social elements had broken the wall after every attempt of repairing it,” said the press note issued by the school.

The school has admitted that the youths residing near the school always beat up the students and the school has often lodged complaints with the police. The school has called a parents’ meeting on Monday.
