According to the inspector in charge of the police station where the case was registered, the suspect is the friend of the victim’s maternal uncle with whom she had been staying since the death of her parents. “The accused started looking after the expenses of the victim’s education and care. He had allegedly raped her repeatedly since 2018 and threatened to harm her if she spoke about the matter to anyone,” the officer said.

After she disclosed the sexual abuse incidents to a teacher at the care facility for women, the authorities at the institute reported the matter to the police, the officer added.

In a separate case, the Pune police have launched a probe in the first week of this month when a 16-year-old girl opened up during a counselling session at her school and told a teacher that she was gang-raped by three men in her nehoubourhood four years ago. The police have made arrests in the case.

In another case November last year, a teenager opened up to the counsellors at her college in the city that she was raped and sexually abused multiple times by her uncle, grandfather and father on multiple occasions for over six years. The police have arrested all the accused family members in the case.
