Health authorities on Friday reported one new case of GBS, taking the case count to 213 suspected patients who have been detected till date.
Out of these, 186 patients have been diagnosed with GBS, whereas 11 deaths have been reported of which four are confirmed as GBS.
Seven suspected deaths were reported. Of the 186 diagnosed with GBS, 152 patients have been discharged, 32 are in the intensive care unit and 19 are on ventilator support. A total of 43 patients are from Pune Municipal Corporation, 95 from newly added villages in the PMC area, 32 from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, 31 from Pune Rural and 10 are from other districts.
GBS is an autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system. It is characterized by muscle weakness, and in severe cases, paralysis. `
Meanwhile, according to an analysis of the 203 cases , 24 patients each are in the 0-9 and 10-19 age group, 44 in the 20-29 age group, 24 in the 30-39 age group, 27 in the 40-49 age group, 29 in the 50-59 age group, 21 in the 60-69 age group, 6 in the in 70-79 age group and four in the 80-89 age group.
Of the 7,080 water samples from different parts of the city that had been sent for chemical and biological analysis to the Public Health Laboratory, samples from 138 water sources were found to be contaminated. In house-to-house surveillance activities, 46,534 houses in Pune civic limits, 28,361 houses in Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation limits and 13,956 homes in Pune rural areas have been surveyed. “We have issued instructions to increase health promotion activities and an appeal has been made to private medical practitioners to notify any GBS patient to public health authorities,” officials said.
