On a ‘Wich Hunt

Contrary to popular legend, the Earl of Sandwich neither invented nor sustained the sandwich, but merely serves as its namesake.

Contrary to popular legend, the Earl of Sandwich neither invented nor sustained the sandwich, but merely serves as its namesake. Records instead point to a Jewish sage ‘Hillel the Elder’,who in 110 BC made a sandwich wrap with flatbread, unwittingly launching the fast-food industry.

Thanks to Pune’s demand for the finest cuisines, global flavours from Japan,Korea,Spain and Mexico are now accessible to every foodie in the garb of a simple sandwich,at restaurants such as Flour Works,Linger On,Terttulia and Burger Barn Cafe.

The Vietnamese Style Roast Pork Sandwich at Flour Works, for instance, features slow-roasted pork with juliennes of carrot, cilantro and jalapenos, dressed with chilli mayonnaise.

“Conventionally, the sandwich is served in a baguette, but not everyone wants it that way,” says Patty Ferrao,Restaurant Manager at Flour Works. This niche bakery in Kalyani Nagar is tucked quietly into a corner, serving a considerable cross-section of favourites from French to Cuban; the Vietnamese Style figures somewhere in between, having recently gained popularity in American delis. The baguette is made fresh daily and is also up for grabs in the breads section, alongside other Flour Works creations like pretzels and bagels. This slice from Vietnam is perhaps best enjoyed with a Cappuccino or,if you’re into the cold stuff,an Iced Coffee.

Sitting opposite Food Bazaar on Baner Road,Linger On Café is a two-storey establishment catering to a mixed crowd of IT professionals, shoppers and youths. Like Flour Works, they have a wide range on their menu, aiming to please everybody. However,it is the Naepolitan Sandwich that stands out for its international appeal. Bacon, pork ham, mozzarella and olives come together between two slices of grilled bread to make this masterpiece from Naples. One of the better sandwiches in town,it can be made with brown or white bread as per choice.

“All our breads are made fresh daily in the café’s on-site bakery by in-house bakers,” says owner Radhika Sanyal. Health conscious or not,the brown bread is definitely recomended for a winning combination in this sandwich.

The Neapolitan is best accompanied by the Koorgi Coffee, which is a tall cup of South Indian style coffee.

Terttulia in Koregaon Park serves some choice sandwiches, choicest among which is the Philadelphia Cheesesteak. The Philly Cheesesteak is traditionally a sandwich of thinly-sliced pieces of steak and melted cheese in a long roll, originating from the place of its name,Philadelphia. Served with fries, the version at Terttulia is no different, save that it’s not super-sized like in the States.

“The beef is cooked in barbecue sauce in our version of the Cheesesteak,” says owner Imrun Sethi.

The coffees at Terttulia are a good way to wash down the beef,if the beers on the menu don’t appeal. Nothing says weekend relaxation better than a great sandwich and a deck of cards and friends to while away a Sunday afternoon with.

Burger Barn Cafe, meanwhile, serves an awe-inspiring,fire-breathing Japanese Teriyaki Burger. The restaurant, fondly known as ‘The Barn’,is located on lane seven in Koregaon Park. Serving their signature chicken patty between two buns, the burger is seasoned with Teriyaki sauce and topped with spicy Wasabi, the Japanese fire-ball.

The Teriyaki sauce lends a strong yet sweet flavour to the sandwich, while the Wasabi unleashes all the pungency and hotness of Japanese Horseradish; similar to the feeling of eating mustard and chilli. This dragon is best tamed with one of the shakes the Barn churns out.
