However, those who wish to have number plates in regional (Marathi) language can have it anywhere on their vehicles, except on the front and rear side that are prescribed for English numberplates as per rules, said a press release issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Manoj Patil on Thursday.
The traffic control branch of Pune police has warned shop owners not to make fancy numberplates as it is violation of Section 51 of Central Motor Vehicle Rules,1989. Legal action would be taken against those violating the rules, it said.
In a drive that started on November 11,the traffic police have seized 3,682 fancy number plates and a fine of Rs 3.95 lakh has been collected from the violators.
