No exam centre in colleges without full-time principal, approved teachers

The University of Pune has decided not to grant examination centres to colleges that don’t have full-time principals and at least 25 per cent of approved teachers in the next academic year (2010-’11).

The University of Pune has decided not to grant examination centres to colleges that don’t have full-time principals and at least 25 per cent of approved teachers in the next academic year (2010-’11). The decision comes as a precautionary measure to curb mass copying, which took place in some colleges with the help of teachers in the past two years.

“From next year, the first-year exams of arts, science, commerce,BBA,BCA and BBM streams will be conducted by the colleges on their own. The conditions for having full-time principal and approved teachers have been drafted so that there will be some control over unruly behaviour during exams,” said Pandit Vidyasagar, director of UoP board of college and university development.

“If a college does not have the approved number of teachers, who will correct the papers? Indirectly,if colleges don’t have approved teachers, they will be disqualified for conducting exams.”

Controller of examinations SM Ahire said,“The idea is to curb copying as well as bringing some discipline in the overall working of the colleges.”

Two years ago,it was found that a question paper of commerce stream was leaked with the help of some teachers in a city college. It was revealed that the teachers, including the principal, did not fulfil the eligibility criteria. Last year too,a few teachers in an engineering institute were suspended after they allegedly helped students in mass copying.

It is after taking cognisance of these incidents that the varsity has put in place conditions for a college to be eligible as an examination centre. The varsity had also sent a letter on these norms to all affiliated colleges on January 11.

“We will be strict about having approved teachers and full-time principals so that there will be no repeat of what has happened earlier. In some colleges there are no proper classrooms and some have tin sheds ,which they call classrooms. This will not be tolerated,” Ahire said. “The colleges are asked to come up with proper facilities and convey it to the university as soon as possible. If we find any college unfit,we will have the right to replace it and transfer the students to a nearby college where conditions are satisfactory.”
