New PMC chief ‘pushes’ Metro plan

The new civic chief said he would give his best in resolving all important issues of the city with the public in mind.

Kunal Kumar, who took charge as Pune Municipal Commissioner on Wednesday apparently wasted no time in pushing the Metro rail project for Pune. On the very first day of taking charge, he revealed that he has already started keeping track of developments of the Metro rail project on an “hourly basis.”

“I have spoken to the concerned union government officers to get the Metro rail project approved for the city. I am keeping track of developments on Metro rail proposal on hourly basis with the civic administration clearing queries of the union government on the proposal in consultation with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC),’’ 38-year old Kumar told reporters after holding a meeting with department heads of PMC. The 1999 batch IAS officer is among the youngest municipal commissioners of the city.

He said the Union government has sought detailed information on expenditure on projects as per the present rate and other details of finances for implementing the project.

“We have sought information from DMRC and would send it immediately to the union government today itself,’’ Kumar said, adding that he was hopeful of getting approval of project.

The new civic chief said he would give his best in resolving all important issues of the city with the public in mind. “I have asked all department heads to submit a note of important works taken up by PMC,” he said, adding, the priority would depend on the situation.

“I believe in work more than giving assurances. My work will speak for me,” Kumar said stressing that he would take along all stakeholders into confidence for improving civic services.

“The need of every city differs so it doesn’t make sense blindly replicating successful initiative taken by me in other places. I will study the issues of city and accordingly make plans,” he said.
