Even as students from nine schools,including Delhi Public School,St Josephs school,Khadki,Sinhagad Springdale School,and two colleges tested positive for the H1N1 virus on Monday,health authorities have no guidelines on closure of any school. Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Sharvari Gokhale who was in the city took stock of the swine flu situation.
Joint Director of Health Dr Ashok Mehta said on Monday 20 people were detected with the virus and while there was no death reported,the number of patients has now reached 1,005 in Pune. A total of 18 people are in the ICU and 67 have been admitted to various hospitals.
Two college students one from D Y Patil Dental College and another from VIT College have also tested positive.
While Mehta said there was no immediate instruction on school or college closure,the state health authorities were coordinating with health officers from the Pune Municipal Corporation,Pimpri Chinchwad and cantonment boards. Chief Medical Officer of PMC Dr R R Pardeshi said they were interacting with school authorities. We are urging them to conduct daily screening of the children. There is less panic among parents and teachers and schools have registered at least 75 per cent attendance of students, said Pardeshi. The health officer also urged people who are suffering from diabetes,bronchial asthma,cardiac ailments and other problems to get examined for viral fever. With sporadic cases coming up everyday,city is developing herd immunity against the virus,he said.
Meanwhile,Jan Arogya Abhiyan activists Dr Abhay Shukla and Dr Anant Phadke said the epidemic needs to be taken more seriously.
