PMC is going to polls early next year. Newsline brings to its readers an overview of the situation with special focus on four panels every week to enable voters to make an informed choice
This panel has been constituted by merging two electoral wards — Kale Padal and Mohammedwadi — currently represented by Rajlaxmi Bhosale of Nationalist Congress Party and Nana Bhangire of Shiv Sena, respectively.
With reservation for open category women in this panel, former mayor and senior NCP leader Bhosale remains a strong candidate for coming civic elections. Bhangire is seeking ticket for his wife to contest election against Bhosale. Bhangire is a known political figure in the panel. His office was awarded an ISO 9001-2000 certificate in 2008 for his contribution towards social work. So a tough battle is expected between NCP and Shiv Sena for open category women.
For the OBC seat, political parties may go in for fresh faces. There is a huge Muslim population here, particularly in Mohammedwadi. So Congress is likely to field Muslim candidate in this panel. Other parties are also planning the same for OBC seat.
Bhosale said,From drainage lines, concrete roads to underground electricity cables, several basic infrastructure development work has been completed in my ward. I am also known in Bhangire’s ward for my work during gastro epidemic in Mohammedwadi some years before. I personally stayed there and ensured that affected people got proper medical treatment; open gutters were cleaned thoroughly and underground gutters were constructed. So people from both wards know me for my development work and experience in politics as well.
Farooq Inamdar, who is seeking ticket form the Congress from OBC seat, said,Congress has traditional votebank in this panel. Party lead by thousands of votes form this area during the assembly and parliamentary elections. There are about 16,000 Muslim voters who believe in the Congress. Former Congress MLA Balasaheb Shivarkar took lead in building a crematorium for Muslims here. Also, several civic problems have not been solved.”
