Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar speaks about his recent compositions for a Marathi film

His allusions from the past become invariable when he talks about music and as Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar looks back in time,it is an endeavor to connect history with the times to come. This time though it is through the Marathi film Khel Satbaracha that has Mangeshkar directing music for Kavi Grace’s poems. Having composed for a film after several years Mangeshkar released the CD recently along with Babasaheb Purandare in the city.

Khel Satbaracha incidentally has Lata Mangeshkar,Asha Bhosale and Vaijnath Mangeshkar singing to Mangeshkar’s music. The film that revolves around the trauma of farmers, owing to their land acquisitions for real estate, will be released this week. Produced by Bahusaheb Bhoir and directed by Ajit Shirole (who were also present during the launch),the cast includes Sandeep Kulkarni,Mohan Joshi,Mohan Agashe,Girish Oak and Pratiskdsha Lonkar.

Known for choosing beautiful poems for his compositions Mangeshkar says,“ There was a time when I was singing Kavi Graces’s poems for a live audience and they were being recorded to be used in a film. His poems are very interpretative, they make you ponder and think. Infact he was to pen the lyrics for the film however owing to his ill health he chose some of his earlier works which aptly describe the reality this film has tried to show. “I have composed eight songs for the film after a very long time, which has allowed me to use my creative freedom unlike today’s films. My culture and the veterans that I have worked with do not allow me to watch and listen to films and songs of the current times that fail to make sense. Infact this is the first film I entirely watched after 27 years,” he adds.

The absorbing music and lyrics of Khel Satbaracha had Asha Bhosle come to the city for recording after almost 32 years while Hridaynath Mangeshkar’s son,Vaijnath debuts in the album with a song composed by his father. Having judged the reality music show Saregamapa Little Champs,Mangeshkar however does not approve the idea of sudden fame, adding, “We lionise the kids for six months and then ignore them. For those youngsters this short fame followed by total oblivion can be very humiliating. While someone else is earning money at their cost a true artist irrespective of the availability of a platform will anyway emerge and be noticed.”
