Justice (retd) Rajinder Sachar on Monday said that the union government should come out with a white paper on the present condition of the Muslim community, and on the measures it has taken to improve their situation since a committee headed by him submitted its report.
Sachar was speaking at a function organised by the Maharashtra Cosmopolitan Education Society in the city. The Sachar panel, which was set up to study the social, economic and educational status of Muslims in India, submitted its report in November 2006.
The committee and its report has done its job to bring to light the reality of the social, economic and educational backwardness of the Muslim community. Now it is the job of the government to take steps to improve this situation. I think that their is a need that the central government comes out with a white paper on the present status of the community and the measures that it has taken so far for augmentation of the situation after we submitted the report, Sachar said.
Sachar said that the huge tracts of land lying unused with Waqf Boards should be used for educational purposes. There was a pressing need to increase literacy among Muslim women,he said.
