The Medical Council of India (MCI) has decided to make modifications in the syllabus of the proposed National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) after objections were raised by states including Maharashtra. Activists in Pune have been pressing for modifications in the syllabus. The decision was taken at a joint meeting of the MCI,Central Board of Secondary Education and the Union health ministry on Monday.
Rajiv Yervadekar,member,MCIs board of governors,said,After suggestions and objections were recieved by MCI on the proposed NEET syllabus,it has now been decided that certain modifications will be included before the final syllabus is put up on the website in the next few days. Though how much and what will be changed can not be disclosed right now.
This means that while a student scoring 90 per cent may not pass the exam,but one who scores 60 per cent may get through,as he will have a higher percentile, explained Yeravdekar.
Earlier,on Saturday a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed at the Supreme Court by city activist Harish Butle,founder secretary,District Entrance Examination Performance Enhancement and Research ( D EEPER).
Opposing MCIs decision to go ahead with NEET in 2012,while the nationwide engineering exams will be held from 2013 onwards,he said,In Maharashtra,students who will appear for the Higher Secondary Examination (Class XII) conducted by the Maharashtra State Board Of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) are still following the old syllabus as the decision by the MCI came only after the academic session was started in the state. While the Class XI syllabus has been changed to match the NEET pattern,the Class XII syllabus will now be changed only next year.
