MBA admission process needs reworking

Today, the Master of Business Administration course is in great demand.

Today, the Master of Business Administration (MBA) course is in great demand. This is for two reasons: 1) The widespread general belief that the degree will facilitate getting jobs easily. 2) Graduate from any branch such as science, arts, commerce, engineering, pharmacy and so on can choose this course.

To meet this increasing demand, new institutions crop up every year, and though apparently the admissions to MBA course appear to be difficult in certain management institutes,in reality it is not that much difficult if you are ready to join any institution.

The process of MBA admissions is not only ludicrous but a subject of research. It takes round about eight months to complete the admission process — ironically, the available teaching period is less than that. This will be clear with the study of the admission process for 2009. It started on January 1 2009 because the advertisement for the MBA admission appeared on this date. The written test was conducted on February 15 2009. The next stage in the process is GDPI (Group Discussion and Personal Interview),which was completed between May 25 to June 12. Thus, the admission process took about five-and-a-half months. The first admission list was published on July 21 2009. The admissions were to be taken up to July 24. The second list was published on August 4 – the admissions were to be taken up to August 6. The third list was published on August 17 and admissions are to be sought up to August 22. The fourth and final list is uncertain due to the swine flu scare in the state.

The teaching for MBA classes was scheduled on August 10. But now it appears that actual teaching will start in the first week of September. The first term is of 12 weeks with the above mentioned data of actual teaching must be available up to the end of November 2009. But during this period, there is a plethora of holidays like Ganesh Chaturthi,Anand Chaturdashi,Dasara,Diwali and so on,which might come to around 10 days, meaning teaching days are lost. Then, the institute has to conduct internal examinations, which takes about a week. Thus, all these days cannot be used for teaching. It will be seen that hardly eight-nine weeks are available for teaching.

Since the MBC students come from various faculties,a large number of them find subjects such as accountancy and economics totally new. It takes about three-four lectures to acquaint them with the basic concepts in these subjects. It is thus practically very difficult to do full justice to the syllabus prescribed. Of course there is standard answer to this difficulty from the experts in this field. Students have to rely more on self-study and so teachers should give them only guidelines. It is high time now to examine this proposition and to consider whether this approach is helpful to the students.

MBA courses of private management institution and deemed universities. Started right in the June and those students get more time for learning. By reducing the period for admissions, more time for teaching will be available. Some suggestions:

1) At present, our centralised system for MBA admissions is followed throughout Maharashtra. This should be decentralised and each university will be asked to undertake admissions in their respective areas.

2) There are too many intermediate institutions in the admission process and each of these have to be supplied various information at every stage of the process.

The intermediate institutions are:
1) Joint Director Pune & Mumbai.
2) Director Technical Education Mumbai
3) Pune University and concerned universities.
4) Admission Regulative Authority (P.N.S.)

It clearly shows the hurdles in the admissions process. If some of these hurdles are eliminated, the admission process can be simplified. The actual teaching starts in the first week of September then university examinations could be held in the second week of December.

Give students a ‘break’
As schools and colleges in the city had been closed owing to the swine flu scare, students who had taken monthly pass for travel on PMPML buses should be allowed to use the same for an extended time span to compensate the unused days of travel. PMPML,which is planning free travel for students in the near future, should consider this.
