Masters Of The Street

Four participants and one judge of Master Chef India 2 did the rounds of the city’s famous street food joints on Thursday. The Chowpatti near Saras Baug was their main destination. From choley bhature to pav bhaji ,they dug into all-time favourites. Chef Ajay Chopra, one of the judges, along with contestants Salma Shazia Fathima,Rajendra Narayan,Puneet Mehta and Dolcee Pratik, added a dash of innovativeness to the street food.

“I had heard a lot about Pune’s choley bhature and wanted to challenge my wits to try something new with it whilst keeping the chowpatti flavour intact,” said Chopra, who made a hummus out of the chole curry and made crisps out of the bhature dough.

The contestants have been divided into different groups to travel across fast food joints and famous chowpattis in Mumbai,Pune and Indore. “Health and hygiene are very essential in our kitchens, but when you crave for pani puri, bhel or even the oily but yummy choley bhature, you have to close your eyes to other factors and simply enjoy the food,” said Chopra. “I came across this amazing bun stuffed with a vegetable filling that had all flavours of sweet-tangy-spicy. I was told it’s called Kachchi Dabeli,” quipped Fathima with much fascination for the snack. Participating on the show is a win-win-situation for all the contestants irrespective of who bags the Master Chef title. “We have learnt to think out-of-the-box when it comes to food,in terms of the preparation as well as presentation. We get to learn a lot from the master classes,” she adds.

For Pratik, the competition lies only in the kitchen. “We are all living away from our familes and since we all have a passion for food,we gel well with each other and live like a family. I am really grateful that the organisers have allowed my infant son to live with me,” says Pratik. Mehta has enhanced his culinary skills to a level he had not even imagined. “My competitors are the ones who have influenced me and contributed to my growth as a versatile chef,” he says.
