Police have arrested one Firozali Noorali Nathani (61),a resident of Palace View Co-operative Housing Society,Kalyani Nagar,on charges of murdering his drunkard son Sohraj Nathani,31.
Officers of Yerawada police, with whom a complaint of murder has been registered, said Sohraj was found unconscious at his residence on Tuesday morning. He was taken to Sassoon Hospital, where he was declared dead. Firozali told the police that Sohraj had hanged himself on a ceiling fan but a post-mortem report said he died of a head injury with ligature constriction around neck.
The police had registered an accidental death case on Tuesday. They said Sohraj was a drunkard and he used to harass the family often. Firozali strangled Sohraj with a cloth and hit a hard object on his head while he was asleep on a sofa in their house around 10.30 pm on Monday, police said.
Firozali has been arrested under Sections 302 (murder),323 and 182 of the Indian Penal Code. Inspector and investigating officer Vishwanath Ghanwat said,Sohraj hailed from a middle class family and he did not work anywhere. His father had helped him by setting up a business, but he did not do it either. Family members say he was harassing them always. On the day of murder,he had abused his mother as she refused to give him money for liquor. This angered the father and he committed the crime out of frustration.
Besides Sohraj,Firozali has two other sons. The family, earlier residents of Ahmedabad, shifted to Pune about four years ago. A magistrate court has remanded Firozali in police custody for seven days.
