Artist Jayant Sathe will unveil the authenticity of Japanese culture through his exhibition of Geishas
Displaying the true culture of Japan,75-year-old Jayant Sathe will exhibit his own handmade Japanese Geisha dolls in an innovative and unique exhibition along with other Indian artifacts of terracotta, lampshades at the Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir starting today. The exhibition will be inaugurated by Bharat Natyam danseuse Sucheta Chaphekar and TV artists Seema and Shrirang Deshmukh
Talking about the unique art,Sathe says,Japanese dolls are an irreplaceable part of the culture in that country. In fact there was a time when it was mandatory for Japanese girls to know the art of doll making in order to get married. Ornaments are not a part of the Japanese culture. Instead, they emphasise on hairdo and that is exactly what they dolls flaunt too. I make authentic Japanese dolls and will be displaying them at the exhibition.
With about 60- 70 different types of dolls on display,Sathe says that the new addition this year is the dolls holding musical instruments. After I got done with my family responsibilities at the age of 55,I got involved full time into this art and the exhibition is a yearly event that talks about my work. The person I learnt doll making from taught me to love the art I am involved into. While I claim 100 per cent authenticity of the pieces that I make, improvisation is an irreplaceable part of my art. For instance, till last year,I would paint their eyes. This year onwards, there will be inserted eyes that give them a more realistic look, smiles Sathe.
Under his organisation Creative Hands,Sathe,a mechanical engineer was one of few artists who introduced indigenous art kits for children in the country. With a tremendous impact of Japanese culture on his philosophy,he adds,Authenticity is one of the major aspects in their art pieces. The its ok attitude that works in India does not work there. For them, every single piece has to be made with precision and with a realistic touch to it and that is exactly what I do at Creative Hands.
(The exhibition is on at Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir till April 11 between 9am to 2pm and 3 pm to 8 pm)
