Yolkshire,Kothrud,is an egg-speciality restaurant that combines taste with innovation
Everything starts with an idea. The story goes that a few years ago, entrepreneur Vinod Shastri, while taking a walk, had a craving for eggs. But then he realised that the restaurants that serve eggs are either very, very expensive or are shady joints. He then thought that it would be great to have a restaurant that served eggs, but at the same time would cater to people of the middle-income group. This was how Yolkshire was born.
Shastri went on to join hands with Makrand Kulkarni, who was in the catering business, and Sahil Khan, who was a family friend. Later, two more people joined the team Varat Deshpande and Bhargav Deo. All five of them are partners in the enterprise. One very startling thing is that three of the five partners are very young in fact,Deshpande is still a second year student at Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce!
The small but cosy restaurant is done up in a bright shade of yellow, which instantly reminds one of an egg yolk. Added to that are subtle tones of bronze and dark brown that contrast with the yellow and make it soothing rather than hurtful to the eye.
We begin our order with the white Eggwich, which is a white bread sandwich and comes with the edges cut off. The sandwich has a filling of thick mayonnaise mixed with egg white that has been boiled, with a leaf of iceberg lettuce on top. Though the idea is good, and the lettuce is nice and crunchy, the mayonnaise turns out to be a slight disappointment because the flavour of the egg doesn’t come through enough. Next we have the Omelette r évé,a three-egg omelette that is folded and has a stuffing of chicken and bell peppers. A tangy tomato-based sauce completes this marvellous dish.
Next comes the Scramblette de la Monde, which is probably the biggest disappoint of the restaurant. Though the scrambled eggs are really nice and fluffy, the promised sausages and salamis are non-existent and the overall taste is very bland. By contrast, the next dish, the Chicken Pasta Arabiatta,is the best dish we have all evening. Slightly on the spicy side, the pasta in red sauce has a strong twang of basil and oregano that really engulfs the taste buds. Finally to finish off,we have the Chicken Avalanche,a sandwich that has salami, sausages and cheese – a good sandwich without being extraordinary.
To conclude, the omelettes are very good,as is the pasta. The sandwiches are decent, while the scrambled eggs fail to keep up to the mark. Though a decent place for breakfast and brunch,Yolkshire fails to deliver as a joint for a full-fledged meal.
