A man and a woman were killed after a speeding Porsche car, allegedly being driven by a 17-and-a-half-year-old boy, rammed into their motorcycle in the Yerwada area of Pune in the early hours of Sunday. The Pune police apprehended the boy, who sources in the force said is from the family of a prominent Pune realtor.

According to the Pune police, the deceased have been identified as Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, both 24 and software engineers from Madhya Pradesh who were working in Pune. Awadhiya’s friend Akib Mulla lodged the First Information Report (FIR) in connection with the Porsche accident at the Yerwada police station.

Amitesh Kumar, Commissioner, Pune City police, said the minor accused was booked for culpable homicide as per provisions of Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). “The father of the accused and the bar which served liquor to the accused are being proceeded against under sections 75 and 77 of the Juvenile Justice Act,” said Kumar.

The police have also invoked other sections of the IPC and the Motor Vehicle Act against the boy. They said a probe was underway to confirm whether he was driving under the influence of alcohol, and his blood samples were taken for medical examination. The police added they were also finding details of the Porsche car and the reason behind the absence of a registration number plate of the vehicle.

‘Out to party’

According to the police probe, the accused, who recently cleared his Class 12 board examination, went out for a party with his friends at a bar and a pub in the Mundhwa area, where he was suspected to have consumed liquor. After this, he headed home in his car.

The police said the boy was driving the Porsche at a high speed and allegedly lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the motorcycle being driven by Awadhiya at Kalyani Nagar junction around 2.30 am. The impact was so severe that Awadhiya and Koshta, who was riding pillion, fell on the road and died.

A video of the accident went viral on social media, and sources said residents thrashed the driver. After receiving information, a police team arrived at the spot and apprehended the driver for investigation.

The police said Awadhiya, a resident of the Airport area, and Koshta, who lived in Kharadi, were also partying with their friends in Kalyani Nagar when the accident took place. After the party, the two left the pub, talked to some friends for some time, and left the spot to go home on a motorcycle when they were hit by the Porsche car.

A senior police officer said the two victims had been working at an IT company in Pune, but Koshta had quit the job and was looking for a new job.

The police said the pubs the deceased and accused visited had closed in time at 1.30 am. It is illegal to serve alcohol to minors.

The police produced the accused before the holiday court in Pune on Sunday afternoon. They sought his custody and permission to try the accused as an adult, but the court refused and granted bail to the accused, said Manoj Patil, Additional Commissioner of Police.

The accused’s lawyer Prashan Patil said the court granted bail to his client under certain conditions. When asked about the bail conditions, Patil said the court told the accused to “work with traffic police of Yerwada for 15 days” and “write an essay on accident”. As per the bail conditions, the accused was also directed to undergo treatment from a doctor to help him quit drinking and “take psychiatric counselling” and submit the report to the court, Patil said.

“We have complete faith in the investigation and shall continue to cooperate with the police agencies. My client is duty-bound to follow the stringent conditions of the Honourable Court. We shall continue to attend the proceedings and wait for the outcome of the investigation,” said Patil.
