Law should be accessible to all: Veerappa Moily

Injustice can be countered only by making law accessibile to every person in the country, said Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily at the Law Day ceremony at the Symbiosis Law School here on Sunday.

Injustice can be countered only by making law accessibile to every person in the country, said Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily at the Law Day ceremony at the Symbiosis Law School here on Sunday.

Moily was addressing law students after inaugurating the Symbiosis-Indo European study centre. Former law minister Ram Jethmalani and Dr SB Mujumdar,Chancellor,Symbiosis International (Deemed University) were also present.

Moily said,“India gained Independence in 1947,but it was not fully achieved then. In 1991,Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the then finance minister, liberated the economy. But 2010 would be the year of liberation of justice.”

Moily said it is premature to judge a person at 22 years, when he or she gets a degree,as some are late bloomers who are not toppers in school. “When I was a practising lawyer in Mangalore,I often saw a man sitting alone in the court. I approached him and found he was a gold medallist from the then Madras University, but was a briefless lawyer. I have started a school for non-performers in school,in my school, the student who gets the lowest percentage,a school dropout and an orphan gets the first preference in admission. But with the right nurturing, all these students have got first-class and distinction in their Class X exams,” he said.

Jethmalani, who administered the Law Day oath to the students, said democracy cannot survive without an educated public.

“Politicians who are corrupt do no want the people to be educated,as educated people ask questions they don’t want to answer,” he said.
