Knife and easy

Have you been gripped by terror because you’re about to undergo surgery in the near future? Or,perhaps there’s nothing wrong with you that requires an operation, yet you dread the possibility of having to undergo one in the future? Do you wish there was a way to “convince” yourself not to have this fear, which you know is irrational? Do all attempts to talk yourself out of this irrational terror simply fail in the face of its magnitude? What do you do then?

To begin with, relax. Accept the fact that fear of surgery is something that afflicts many people – and you are just one among them. The other comforting fact is that the team of doctors conducting the surgery are experts who will,in all likelihood, have conducted hundreds (or thousands) of operations between themselves. They are experts at handling such situations and reassuring patients who display even low levels of fear. “What’s more, you will only be conscious for a few minutes in the operation theatre before you are administered anaesthesia. Once anaesthesia is administered, within seconds you will be totally unconscious for the next few hours – devoid of any sensations of pain or fear,” says anaesthesiologist Dr Mohan Swami from Ruby Hall clinic.

Much as an airplane pilot relies on the ground crew, flight personnel and air traffic controllers for a safe, successful flight,a surgeon relies on other members of his team for total patient care. The essential member of the operating team is the anaesthesiologist. When researching on the choice of your surgeon, also check who will be administering and monitoring anaesthesia during the surgery. It’s prudent to know about an anaesthesiologist’s credentials, training, and safety record. An anaesthesiologist is a medical doctor trained to administer anaesthesia before surgery and assist in managing the medical care of patients before, during and after surgery. Knowing beforehand that the surgeon’s team has an accomplished anaesthesiologist will put half your fears to rest.

Swami adds that during every moment of the surgery, the anaesthesiologist monitors the patient closely, checking all parameters and speedily computing various dynamics of the patient’s body. With close understanding between doctors in a team, the chances of anything going wrong are minimal.
