JSSY takes a big leap

Free and cashless services have been provided to 1,819 pregnant women under the ambitious initiative Janani Shishu Suraksha Yojana (JSSY) in the state. Launched in all districts of Maharashtra on October 7,the scheme had reached out to more than 1,000 women in just a month,said Dr Suresh Gupta,Additional Director of the State Family Welfare Bureau.
The new initiative would provide free and cashless services to pregnant women delivering normally or through caesarean section and also cover sick newborns (up to 30 days after birth) at government health institutions in rural and urban areas. It is estimated that the new JSSY initiative will benefit more than one crore pregnant women and newborns who will access public health institutions in both urban and rural areas in the country every year.
Gupta told The Indian Express that all districts of Maharashtra have been covered under the scheme and women who had enrolled prior to the scheme have also been involved. The scheme covers 1,816 primary health centres,eight women’s hospitals,23 district hospitals and 450 rural hospitals in the state,Gupta added.
Transport facility for pregnant women from home to hospital or to transfer them to another institution and a drop back home is free under the scheme. So far,100 ambulances have been enlisted for the project apart from involving private vehicles,Gupta said. The uniqueness of the scheme is the free nutritional diet provided during the stay in the health institutions,three days in case of normal delivery and seven days in case of a caesarean section,Gupta added.
JSSY supplements the cash assistance given to a pregnant woman under the existing Janani Suraksha Yojana and is aimed at mitigating the expenses families incur on pregnant women and sick newborns,says Gupta.
