Fools Day (April 1) is limited to SMSs and e-mails nowadays with practical pranks no where as popular or common as they used to be
Given the popularity it enjoyed,we had a movie and song dedicated to this day by the Hindi Cinema industry in the year 1964. Now 45 years down the line,it seems, the day has lost its charm. Finding out from Puneties,we concluded that Fools Day has become unimportant enough to ignore for the coming generation, which, ironically calls fun as their mantra of life. They also share the most memorable and funny pranks and jokes that either they have played on someone else or have been played upon them.

I really miss on the pure and harmless fun of April Fool Day. I do miss the fun that we used to have during our college days. The best thing was that that was all very harmless prank. Today, youngsters are more into Valentines Day,traditional day and saree day that they seldom enjoy the pure fun of Fools Day. I though dont remember any particular prank as they all were light jokes.

Yes indeed, people are forgetting the fun may be because we are too busy in safeguarding our present monetary interest thereby forgetting about the fun element in life. As for the most memorable prank,I remember the most recent one. I floated an e-mail,a wedding invitation to all my close friends saying my marriage has been fixed urgently so the last minute invite. I had attached a specially made wedding card, which said nothing but “April Fool”. The reaction were hilarious,as I started getting calls from all my friends, who were no less than cursing me for exciting them with such an unexpected news and then disappointing them.

I dont see excitement in anybody anymore when it comes to Fools Day. It is like any other day to us. Our circle is shrinking and so is our creativity and enthusiasm to even make the effort to play pranks. The SMSs and e-mails are though doing their bit,but it does not promises fun, moreover, there are forwarded mails and so it becomes redundant. I had to go for one interview, back during my graduation days. I was told by my friend that it has been preponed so I stayed up the whole night to prepare– got all my certificates, plannned everything, got my clothes ironed, polished my shoes. I was awake till 3 am,preparing things, then I woke up at 6 30 in the morning. I had my interview at 11.30 am and I was waiting for my friend to pick me since 9.30 am. At 11 am he called me that he wont be able to come and I have to go on my own. I fired my friend. However, when I was about to leave I saw him standing outside my house with my other friends. The moment I saw them I realised that its 1st of April and they had a good laugh at my expense.

I still look forward to Fools day, though we dont quite plan for it now. But I have some fond memories. Once,as a prank,I wrote letters to eight of my close friends saying I have cancer and I would die soon. I requested them to fulfill my one wish and thus I made them pamper me and fulfill my wishes. All of them were crying until I told them that that was a prank.

The day has always been special for me and I always make sure that I have my share of fun that day, whether it is with my students or my wife. Last year I had planned different pranks for all my batches and I have plans for today as well. Last year,I made them put off the air condition as a punishment only to reveal later that it was a joke. I told my students that we dont have a music system and asked them to practice with their mobile phones. These were taken seriously by my students and thus was more fun for me. I also plan pranks with my wife.
