Commercial designers Prashant and Vidyut Kulkarni have interpreted ‘office and daily routine’ in different ways for their ongoing exhibition
Organised cubicles,cushioned chairs,and employees attentively staring at computer monitors while tapping away at the keyboards at lightning speed. Not to forget,the coffee cups. This is perhaps a common everyday sight at any of the IT firms. Commercial designers Prashant and Vidyut Kulkarni used this as an inspiration for their works. Prashant’s latest series on oil base,titled Servers,explores the space which is otherwise black and white. Vidyut’s ‘Mindscape’ escapes from the regular job hours and the concrete walls. Their works on canvas and paper are on display at Darpan Art Gallery,Senapati Bapat Road,till April 4.
I wanted to bring out the fantasies of colours and textures and painted whatever came to my mind, says Vidyut. Prashant depicts furniture,white boards and walls of his office as living beings. His series also brings out the thoughts of a human mind. It is the result of letting oneself loose in spite of daily complexities, says Prashant. I feel that these objects have a life of their own. They think and interact with each other in their own way, he adds. Prashant has been working in the corporate sector for over a decade now but always harboured a passion for painting. I would often yearn to get back to my passion while I was at work, he says. He started pursuing his love for art a year back. I sketched a chair while I was conducting a meeting and realised how things of everyday sight can be great subjects of art and colour, he narrates.
There are many limitations of being a commercial designer. “We need to use software products required by the market. This limits our talent, says Vidyut who was eventually dissatisfied with such technical work. I wanted to play on the canvas and let my mind wander off to a land of dreams which is nowhere close to daily meetings,computers and emails, she adds.
