The Pune Municipal Corporations promise to get the pre-monsoon work in the city completed before the arrival of rains could not be achieved as its work on road repair and maintenance as well as nullah and river cleaning is still on even as the city experienced rainfall for the second consecutive day on Wednesday.
The city witnessed heavy showers in the afternoon and in the evening, leading to water-logging at several places exposing the civic administrations claim of having taken steps to address the issue. There were several spots in the city where there was water-logging and in some places potholes emerged on the tarred road surface.
PMC has undertaken work on various city roads where water-logging was witnessed the previous monsoon. We are keeping a close watch on effectiveness of the measures to check waterlogging, said additional city engineer Pramod Nirbhavane.
He said that the locations where the water-logging created inconvenience to citizens and led to traffic jams have been reduced. The rainfall showed that there has been an improvement in the situation and the inconvenience to citizens has reduced drastically, Nirbhavane said.
PMC had awarded contract of Rs 25 crore for maintenance and repair of roads before monsoon, but managed to get only 60 per cent of the work completed so far. The work of road repair is still on in parts of the city and would soon be completed, a civic officer said.
Meanwhile, the work of cleaning nullah and river is still on.
The PMC got the nullah cleaned but the debris removed from it has been done along with the natural stream. This would again flow along with rain water and block the nullah, said resident Amol Saxena of Pashan area.
PMC was also seen struggling to complete the work of laying pipelines for sewage treatment in the river bed. The levelling of land in the river is almost complete and now the sludge is being removed from it, he added.
