Students from the Northeast discussed their problems with the University of Pune vice-chancellor W N Gade in an interaction organised by the UoP in view of the recent exodus of NE from the city.

Gade said,“We wanted to know if the students were facing problems on the campus or affiliated colleges in the city. I have given directives to hostel authorities to accommodate the NE students studying in varsity departments or colleges but living in rented flats in the city.”

Gade said so far, three boys and two girls have approached the UoP for accommodation.

During the interaction on Saturday, students spoke on a range of issues such as racial slurs, teasing and being fleeced.

Over 30 students from various colleges and varsity departments attended the programme.

However,a majority of students insists that Pune is safe. A student of Anthropology department from Nagaland, who is a resident of Gokhalenagar, said,“I am new to the city, but have not faced any issues so far.”

Lawrence, who is currently pursuing MA in English in Garware college, said,“I have faced racial remarks on several occasions. People often ask me which country do I belong to. However,on campus, the situation is different and I have not faced any issues.”
