Taking notice of the latest estimated figures suggesting that about 80,000 to one lakh experts in High Performance Computing (HPC) are needed in the Indian industry, the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) has taken an initiative to inculcate HPC culture among engineering students across the state. C-DAC will be soon reach them through various symposia.

C-DAC has identified around 30 colleges in the state, including 10 from Pune, where it feels the HPC solutions can be introduced right away. “We want to disseminate the HPC culture in engineering colleges so that required manpower can be created,” S P Dixit, director of C-DAC,told The Indian Express on the sidelines of a symposium organised at College of Engineering,Pune.

Around 100 representatives of various engineering colleges from across the state participated in the symposium.

“The idea of such symposia is to promote result-oriented HPC solutions and address the critical shortage of diverse,well-prepared,high performance computing workforce required at national and global level,” he said.

“HPC solutions have applications in scientific, technical, business and entertainment sector such as e-banking,structural designs,animation,cine-video production and preparation of seismic data. However,of the total HPC systems in the world,India’s share is only 1.2 per cent when the US has a share of 58 per cent. Hence,HPC-trained manpower is in big demand in India to build systems in software development,” he said.

Director of directorate of technical education (DTE) S K Mahajan said the DTE would consider introducing HPC in the curriculum. “HPC will enable the faculty and students in scientific and engineering disciplines to exploit the benefits of parallel processing,” he said.

“The DTE is coming up with key performance indicators (KPI) for engineering colleges to evaluate them. According to KPI,the faculty will henceforth need to do research and generate revenue through consulting. HPC solutions can be a potential area,” said Mahajan.

Goldi Misra, group coordinator and head of HPC Solutions Group, said that the C-DAC had planned 20 national symposia for the engineering institutes and academia in high performance computing across the country.

“The symposia will simultaneously culminate into national level workshops, competitions on parallel programming, software tools and programming environments,” he said.
