At a two-day workshop on gastroenterology at KEM hospital,gastroenterologist and therapeutic endoscopist Dr Amit Maydeo said that there is a need to consider endoscopy primarily as a preventive measure. “Early cancers can be picked up through endoscopy and timely treatment can be given to the patient. It is essential not to neglect acidity and stomach ailments especially if one has a high intake of non-vegetarian food and low intake of fruits and vegetables,” he said. An endoscopy procedure in India with best techniques can cost as little as Rs 3,000-5,000. “It should be made more accessible to the smallest villages for which government intervention is necessary. In the US,it is compulsory for every US citizen above 45 years of age to get a colonoscopy done which helps in preventing many major stomach ailments. In India,cancer of the colon is found on a large scale too,but no such initiatives are taken by our government,” he said.

Post Graduate Programme

Sancheti Healthcare Academy (SHA) has announced the launch of their New Academic Course titled “Assistant to Physician- a Post Graduate Programme”. This course is the first to be introduced by the Sancheti Healthcare Academy in Maharashtra. Physician assistants work under the supervision of a physician. Physician Assistants (PAs) are formally trained to provide diagnostic,therapeutic,and preventive healthcare services,as delegated by a physician. This newly introduced course would be taught to students at the academy,says Manisha Sanghavi,executive director,SHA. This is the first course where the student not only gets theoretical knowledge but hands-on experience assisting the best of the physicians,she adds.
