The future we want — listen what older persons are saying” was the theme for this year’s International Day of Older Persons,which is observed on October 1. Janaseva Foundation,in association with other organisations and NGOs,will celebrate the day in the city on October 3 by organising an Anand Melava at Shri Ganesh Kala Krida Manch from 8 am to 6 pm. Over 3,000 senior citizens are expected to attend this day-long event that starts with an inaugural function,felicitation of outstanding senior citizens,educational lectures and a pravachan. The event will be inaugurated by Manikrao Gavit,Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment. On December 14,1990,the UN General Assembly declared October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons,following up on initiatives such as the Vienna International Plan of Action on Ageing,which was adopted by the 1982 World Assembly on Ageing and endorsed later that year by the assembly. The International Day of Older Persons was observed for the first time throughout the world on October 1,1991. In 2002,the second World Assembly on Ageing adopted the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing to respond to the opportunities and challenges of population ageing in the 21st century and to promote the development of a society for all ages.

Ensuring Ease<\b>

An Appeal<\b>

Four-year-old Shreya Bhakare has suffered 30 per cent superficial to deep burns and is admitted to Surya Hospital. The expenses for her treatment amount to over Rs 3 lakh and Shreya’s father Sharad has appealed for financial assistance. Interested donors can contact Surya Hospital on 67213900.

A Journey of Will <\b>

Deepa Malik,who was recently felicitated with the Arjuna Award,began the longest pan-India drive starting from Chennai to Delhi,which touched Pune on September 25. Malik,who is paralysed waist down,has won several awards in biking,swimming and car rallies. She participated in the project WoW — Will on Wheels — started by the students of Sathyabama Iniversity in Chennai to create awareness about issues faced by differently-abled people while driving on city roads.

Affordable Innovations<\b>

Though Disease Modifying Therapies (DMTs) have widened the spectrum of available treatment options of Multiple Sclerosis (MS),a nerve disorder,the access to these therapies is still an issue of concern for experts. City-based neurologists suggest that these therapies are too expensive for patients due to lack of insurance coverage. But now a range of new therapies can target different types of MS.

Sharing Knowledge<\b>

Sanofi,the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) have announced their first joint public health initiative in India,titled KiDS (Kids and Diabetes in Schools). The project aims to spread awareness about Type 1 and 2 diabetes,benefits of healthy nutrition and exercise habits among children in various schools throughout India,and encourage a safe and supportive school environment to manage diabetes and avoid discrimination against children suffering from Type 1 diabetes. “The first step was a feasibility study to understand the status of diabetes management by reviewing current policies on diabetes in schools,existing school guidelines and initiatives,good practices and to identify gaps in knowledge,” said Dr K Srinath Reddy,President,PHFI.
