The University of Pune’s interdisciplinary school of health sciences will conduct a conference on public health on October 21 and 22. The Pune Public Health Research Conference aims at bringing together public health researchers from this city to understand different facets of public health with evidence-based data,says Dr Anita Kar,coordinator of the school of health sciences at the varsity. The two-day conference will have a host of experts speaking on communicable and non-communicable diseases. Key topics like strengthening health systems,deficiency of Vitamin B 12 in vegetarians,adolescent obesity and others will be discussed during the two-day meet,Kar said.

Cytometry Workshop

Dr DY Patil Biotechnology and Bioinformatics Institute,a constituent unit of Dr DY Patil Vidyapeeth,is organizing the ’12th Indo-US Flow Cytometry Workshop on Applications of Laser Flow Cytometry in Biomedical Research’,in collaboration with the University of Miami,USA,on October 19 and 20. The workshop will be inaugurated by Professor Ramesh C Deka,director,AIIMS,New Delhi.

Doctors’ Conference

We must all strive together to dump into the ocean the three Gold medallions India has earned,” said Dr Prathap C Reddy,chairman,Apollo Hospitals,referring to the dubious distinction we have of being the most populous in the world in terms of Diabetes,Heart Ailments and Cancer. He was addressing a live telecast via video conferencing at the VII International Jain Doctors’ Conference,2011. He added that forums like these were very important in getting such messages across,to raise awareness and lead to corrective measures. Chief guest,Sangeeta Reddy,executive director,Apollo Hospitals,referred to the ‘Billion Hearts Beating’ campaign launched by the Apollo group and appealed to the delegate doctors to guide people to take preventive measures,especially with respect to ailments linked to genes and lifestyles. Over 2,500 delegates from across the country attended the conference. Dr Ramesh Ranka,organising chairman said.

Back on feet

Dr Nikhil Likhate and his team at the Sahyadri hospital helped treat a rare and unusual disorder called hemathrosis (bleeding in the joints) on a 30-year-old,priest Sushil Sathe. Due to this disorder,he had repeated attacks of bleeding into the joints and even trivial trauma caused degeneration and development of severe kind of osteoarthritis (worn out joint) of both the knee joints that crippled him at this early age. A release issued here stated that walking short distances made him miserable. However,Sathe underwent a successful bilateral total knee replacement of both the knee joints performed by Likhate and his team,along with expert haematologist Dr Shashikant Apte who guided them. After two months,the priest is back on his feet,leading a normal life and going about his responsibilities independently.
