Back on feet

Abeda Pathan (name changed) had been suffering from severe knee and back pain for last few years. The problem began with pain in the knees and after a year, started affecting the back also. Her condition gradually worsened and for last two years, her life has been highly restrictive. She was bedridden and was unable to walk or perform daily chores of life. Dr Narendra Vaidya, joint replacement specialist from Lokmanya hospital, treated Pathan and found that she had a swelling on the right knee. “We performed an Arthoscopic Synovectomy – surgical removal of the thin membrane lining a joint capsule (synovium). This helps in reducing the swelling and the pain,” said Vaidya. During the procedure it was further revealed that her knee joint was completely destroyed, making the case very complicated. After evaluating the risks,Dr Vaidya, along with his team of doctors comprising Dr Vishal Mohite and Dr Rakesh Patil, took up the challenge and performed a complicated knee joint replacement with the help of a special implant with an extension rod. The hospital staff, including Dr Anupriya Salvi, and the physiotherapy team made special efforts along with Vaidya in getting Abeda back on her feet.
