The German Bakery may not reopen on Monday, exactly a year after a blast had blown it up.
The reopening of the popular food joint will most likely happen in another 45 days. With 90 per cent of the reconstruction work completed, the owners are setting a safe deadline this time. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar is likely to be the chief guest at the inauguration of the bakery. Owner of the Bakery,Snehal Kharose, said it would have the same flavour.
With some minor changes in seating arrangements,it would seat about 70-80 people on the first floor,we are retaining the flavour of the bakery as it was, said Kharose.
With support of patrons, staff and the government,we have been able to bounce back, she adds. The state government had allotted Rs 14 lakh for bakery renovation. Kharoses availed of a loan to rebuild the bakery at the same location. Security being of prime concern,Kharoses said they had appealed to the police regarding security and all care will be taken on that front. Whether it is metal detectors, increased security,CCTVs,we will make all arrangements from our end, she said.
The Kharoses have decided to retain their old staff of 15-20 people. When asked about former manager of the German Bakery Gopal Karkee planning to open his own bakery,Kharose said,He was been with us for 23 years but no longer works for us and I would not want to comment on the new bakery he plans to open.
Patrons are happy the joint will be at the same site. Smita Aggarwal of Koregaon Park, who was a regular at the bakery,is relieved that her favourite hangout will run again. It is very courageous of the bakery owners to restart everything, she says.
