Gangster externment: RTI query throws light

The Principal Secretary (appeals),cancelled the externment order of dreaded gangster Nilesh Ghaiwal on February 11,2010,stating that the Pune police passed the externment order against him citing the MCOCA charges against him, when the court had,in fact, absolved him from the MCOCA charges.

This was revealed to activist Vihar Durve, who had sought information about the externed criminals under the Right to Information Act (RTI) from the Pune police.

Sources however said that Ghaiwal was a dreaded gangster involved in serious offences like murder and his externment order could not be cancelled without political interference. Ghaiwal is the prime suspect in the Dattawadi shootout that killed Sachin Kudle who belonged to the Gajanan Marne gang on Sunday.

Police record show that Ghaiwal,a resident of Shastrinagar,Kothrud, was earlier booked in two sensational murders including that of a businessman Mahendra alias Bablu Kawedai in 2003 and Patit Pavan Sanghatna activist Milind Dhole in 2001.

He was an active member of the dreaded Gajanan Marne gang in Kothrud. He parted company with Marne following a dispute and formed his own gang. He was also booked under the stringent MCOCA along with Marne, when both were working together. But the court freed both from MCOCA charges. Since then they have been battling for supremacy.

Due to Ghailwal’s increasing criminal activities, police had externed him from the city for six months on October 26,2009. But he filed an appeal against the externment order. And on February 11,2010,his externment order was cancelled. Then on March 29,he shot at Sumit Naik at Kothrud and on Sunday,he gunned down Kudle at Dattawadi.

Police have so far arrested 13 persons in the Dattawadi shootout case. However,Ghaiwal, the prime suspect,is still untraceable. The four suspects — Santosh Gawde,Prashant Dhumal,Aadesh Kale and Amol Badhe who were arrested on Tuesday, have been remanded to police custody till May 18.
