PMC is going to polls early next year. Newsline brings to its readers an overview of the situation with special focus on four panels every week to enable voters to make an informed choice
This panel includes the complete Ved Bhavan ward and 40 per cent of Mahatma Society ward represented by NCP corporator Shankar Kemse and MNS corporator Rajabhau Gorde respectively.
The area, which was included in the PMC limits in 1997,saw its first civic election a decade ago in 2001. Back then,Pashan,Sutarwadi and surrounding areas were also included in this panel. Two Congress candidates and one Shiv Sena candidate was elected from this area that time.
In 2007,when the area was further divided into Ved Bhavan and Mahatma Society wards,Kemse was elected as an independent candidate (who later joined the NCP) and Gorde from MNS respectively. However, with the Election Commission reserving the ward for Other Backward Classes and Open category (women),the existing corporators have a tough fight getting that one seat.
Kemse said that he has an upper hand considering that his ward forms the larger part of the panel. On the other hand,Gorde says that MNS will emerge a clear-cut winner as the area has turned into pro-MNS area in the last five years. Kemse and Gorde have already decided to contest from this panel, whereas for the first time since the area was included in PMC limits,it will be represented by a woman candidate.
The sitting corporators have developed the Pandit Bhimsen Joshi garden,a 85-litre water tank in Chandani Chowk along with the 5-ton biogas plan that generated power and runs 125 streetlights in Bavdhan area. However, the proposed over bridge from Chandani Chowk to Kinara Hotel and the road along Maratha Mandir Hall is still pending.
