When music director AR Rahman and film-maker Mani Ratnam wanted a groovy, yet folksy tribal feel for a song in Raavan — a film loosely based on Ramayana, they got UK-based singer Am’Nico into the studio. The result is Thok De Killi— a spirited AR Rahman number sung by Am’Nico and Sukhwinder Singh.

Am’Nico,a UK-based Indian singer who has been rocking the charts as a popular voice in the underground music scene in the UK ,says,“The song is inspired from gilli danda— the traditional Indian village game. I was working on an album,Donasian – We Can Make It Better, the music of which was done by Rahman and my brother Mukhtar. I am glad he remembered me and called me to sing for such a prestigious project.”

The high-energy track in the film has an interesting prelude and opens with loud and rustic notes, that is fast-paced throughout. There is also a grand chorus and some heavy orchestration done by Rahman.

T he younger brother of the popular UK- based artiste Mukhtar Sahota,Am’Nico grew up listening to a lot of Punjabi music and to the likes of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan,Ghulam Ali and the Sabri brothers. Working with Rahman,he says,in an email interview from Wolverhampton ,was a fabulous experience. “He is always looking for new ideas. Since he is a workaholic,it isn’t easy keeping up with him. But he is very warm and encourages creativity. We recorded different parts of the song at separate locations. Despite this,he did a great job of putting everything together nicely. It’s a captivating track,” says Am’Nico, who had collaborated with Apache Indian on his previous album. After his Bollywood debut,he is now working on his next album,My Time, which will release this year end.
