It has its name firmly rooted in the annals of the city’s history. And for the students who pass out of the hallowed climes of the College of Engineering Pune the experience of having studied at the college is beyond the mere definition of becoming an engineer. “For us,studying here at COEP means having outscored a lot of applicants. It is not just about being a student here but about learning new things every time we sit down to discus,” says first year student Kaustubh Utpat.

While for most part of the day the college canteens remain empty, given the fact that students prefer to attend lectures than sit out of it,they are full during the break hours. “The reason behind this is simple. Professors actually teach very well here. As a result, most of us do not bunk the lectures, because the things taught are genuinely interesting,” Utpat adds. The college canteen however is more of a debating ground about the various topics that the students learn during their lectures.

“It could be something as simple as the forces acting on a moving body to something as complicated as metallurgical properties of metals and the resulting stresses that occur on them. We talk about them all. Most of the times, our discussions revolve around engineering topics,” adds Ajit Rohide,a metallurgical engineer.

But if outsiders get a feeling that the place is full of students who epitomise the adage ‘all work and no play’,then they are starkly mistaken, feels another first year M Tech student Vijay Singh Chavan. “Oh engineering topics form only a part of our discussions here. As of now, most of our discussions revolve around the upcoming auditions for the drama and dance teams. Sports also is a favourite topic,” he says.

Films and politics too make up a lot of the talks here. “Just because we are technical students doesn’t mean that we have no interest in worldly happenings. For instance, everything that happens in the world of politics and in the international arena is in some way or the other connected to our lives. Which is why we also have long animated debates about current burning topics. And movies always act as breathers when the conversations gets too heavy,” laughs Viraj Athavale,a M Tech student.

Another interesting point that Sagar Bansode, another metallurgical engineer, makes is about the attitude of the students towards their professors. He says,“We have seen how students in other colleges act and make fun of their professors behind their backs, and sometimes even in front of them. And that is something that is really sad. One thing about the students here is that they never ever do that. Not in the college lectures, not during the practicals and certainly not in the college canteen.”
