Emerson,a US-based diversified technology and manufacturing company,on Tuesday, officially opened its new design-engineering centre at the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjewadi.

The new Emerson Design Engineering Centre (EDEC),with an investment of $ 20 million in the long-term,will meet its global engineering needs.

Ed Monser, chief operating officer,Emersion said that emerging markets such as India and China contributed to the company’s growth and the economic slowdown was the ‘right time to come up with new products.’

“We will continue to invest in the Indian market and will be open to acquiring other companies. Last month,we acquired the company Trident Powercraft and we think this is the right time to expand our growth. We are keen on leveraging the opportunities in the power sector, particularly the solutions for nuclear and wind power,” he said.

“In India,we have greater growth in the last five years than any other emerging market country, and about talent where we’re looking at EDEC as an investment that will drive innovation and new product development,” he added

EDEC provides product and software design and engineering services for Emerson’s divisions worldwide. EDEC was Emerson’s first corporation-wide engineering centre when it was created and is now its largest such facility. In 2003,Emerson established its first design-engineering center in Pune with 16 employees. The new facility in Hinjewadi now has more than 500 employees and the number will be increased to 800 in the future. Randall Ledford, senior vice president and chief technology officer of Emersion, said the talent pool in Pune was the main attraction for the company to set up its centrehere. “For the past five years,we are recruiting 100 people per year and to tap the engineering talent in the region,we have tied up with various educational institutes. We anticipate that this facility in Pune will be the source of many new Emerson products and solutions,” he said. EDEC’s director Amit Paithankar said that the engineering division in Pune has come up with 6-7 major products globally and targets 22-25 innovative products in the coming two years. “PC interface software, driver compressor, smart wireless gate way and new high performance drives are some of the products that we are developing now. The 15 labs in the new centre will add more value to the product line,” he said.
