As the flyover on Ganeshkhind Road is all set for reopening, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has started the process of constructing a grade separator at the Pune University junction to further ease the traffic flow on the busy road.
The proposed work also includes a connecting arm from Senapati Bapat Road to a double-deck bridge at University Chowk on Ganeshkhind Road. The grade separator will be 7.5 metres wide and 440 metres long, with a covered portion of 210 metres and an open length of 150 metres and 80 metres on either side. It will be heading from Shivajinagar directly to Aundh, skipping the Pune University junction. Traffic from Shivajinagar to Baner and Pashan will move from the double-decker flyover, while vehicles heading towards Senapati Bapat Road will take the existing road.
The connecting arm will be 152 metres long and 7.5 metres wide, with an approach road of length 87.50 metres.
The approaches for the flyover will be made of reinforced earth walls.
Currently, the Pune University junction is facing huge traffic chaos due to the ongoing Metro and double-decker flyover project.
According to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Chief Engineer Yuvraj Deshmukh, the grade separator will provide a seamless journey to Aundh from Shivajinagar. He said the work on the grade separator will be taken up only after the double-decker flyover is opened so that the traffic on the existing road can be diverted.
“The PMC is now completing the administrative process, and it will be completed in the next few months,” said Deshmukh.

The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), which is constructing the flyover, is expected to finish the work in the next few months.
“The civic administration, after regularising the traffic through the flyover, will take up the grade separator work at the Pune University junction,” said Shrikant Gaikwad, PMC executive engineer.
The state government demolished the two flyovers on Ganeshkhind Road at Pune University and E-Square in 2020 to build an integrated double-decker flyover with Metro rail on top from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar. The work on the flyover should have been completed in 2024, but the delay has led to its opening for vehicular traffic.
The double-decker flyover is 1.7 km long and has a two-lane ramp for vehicles heading from Aundh and Baner towards Shivajinagar and a three-lane flyover from Shivajinagar to Baner and Pashan. There will be at-grade road connectivity from Aundh, Baner and Pashan to Senapati Bapat road.
