Laparoscopy is a relatively newer in India. Basically a surgery which is done by making small incisions in the abdomen and with the aid of a camera, this procedure has a lot of advantages over the typical, open surgery, including reduced pain and a smaller time required for recovery. On the flip side,of course, this procedure is far,far more expensive.
Recently, famed laparoscopy expounder Dr Liselotte Mettler, from Kiel,Germany, visited city-based clinic Galaxy Care Laparoscopy Institute and expressed great admiration for the work being done. I personally feel that laparoscopy is the best kind of endoscopic surgery,as it is a more clinical procedure,as opposed to open surgery. It leaves no big wound,is less painful, and does less alteration to other organs. And whatever I have seen in India,I am very impressed. This branch of surgery is still catching on,but India seems to be ahead of the pack, she says.
On the backdrop of this is the Da Vinci robot that the Galaxy Care Laparoscopy Institute has installed in its premises. Dr Shailesh Puntambekar, director of the clinic, says,With the robot, one has the advantage of depth, one gets 3-D vision, unlike in the TV procedure, that is limited to being 2-D. This surgery is also quicker, because a doctor is seated and rested while performing the surgery, whereas in other cases,a doctor is always on his feet and may get tired easily. The robot works on a master-slave programme, somewhat like virtual reality whatever action is taken by the master at the console is replicated by the robot, which does the surgery.
