Ex-servicemen gathering
A seminar-cum-interaction was organised at Maha Sainik Lawn on Tuesday in coordination with the Department of Sainik Welfare to apprise veteran officers,Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs),jawans as well as wives and widows of defence personnel on issues pertaining to Ex-servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) ,recruitment procedures and various welfare measures. The programme was presided over by Major General Ajay Saxena,General Officer Commanding,Pune Sub Area. Over 500 participants attended the event.
Animal birth control pgm at INS Shivaji
An Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme for stray dogs has been initiated at INS Shivaji,Lonavala under the aegis of NGO In Defense of Animals,India. The NGO has been working for the welfare of animals for the past 11 years. The problem of non-availability of premises for the NGO and heavy rain has been overcome by creation of a temporary centre within the premises of INS Shivaji. Due care of stray dogs,both pre and post surgery,is being undertaken at this centre. A total of 115 dogs have been sterilised till date.
Lecture on Somalian piracy at SIMS
To understand the gravity of piracy off Somalian coast,its effects on Indian shipping and solutions to resolve the issue,Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies (SIMS) organised a lecture on Geo-political Situations in Africa. The lecture was addressed by Mohamed Omar,ex-ambassador of Somalia. “The issue of piracy in Somalia is complex,involving not just Somalis but also certain external factors,including some European nations. While the Somalian coast is a very strategic,it is also a victim of illegal dumping of toxins and toxic wastes. Internal political unrest added to the woes of the population. All this encouraged the population to resort to means such as piracy,” said Omar.
Inter-college fest at Army Institute
The Army Institute of Technology (AIT) is organising inter-college Sports and Technical festival PACE and SOLUTIONS 2012 respectively from February 15 to 22 where 25 city colleges and 2,000 students will participate in more than 20 events. Intellect building competitions like Gen BC Joshi Quiz on February 18 is open for corporate also. In SOLUTIONS,events like Code Red,Vulcan,Data Bus Pirates,Spark,Tech Snap Hunt will be held and in PACE various events like football,basket ball,volleyball and chess will take place.
